Understanding Dry Granulators: A Key Technology in Powder Processing

A dry granulator is a type of processing equipment used in the pharmaceutical, chemical, and food industries to compress and form powder into granules without the need for moisture or solvents. Unlike wet granulation, dry granulation offers a clean, efficient, and cost-effective method of producing granules, especially for moisture-sensitive materials.

A dry granulator, also known as a dry granulation machine or dry granulation equipment, operates by compacting powders between two rotating rollers. This process forms dense sheets or flakes, which are then milled into uniform granules. This method is particularly suitable for formulations where adding liquid could affect product stability or where drying processes are undesirable due to energy consumption or time constraints.

Working Principle of a Dry Granulation Machine
The working mechanism of a dry granulator primarily involves two steps:
Compaction: The powder is compressed using high pressure between counter-rotating rollers, forming a dense ribbon or flake.
Size Reduction: The ribbon is then milled into smaller, more manageable granules.
This technique is commonly referred to as roller compaction, and the equipment itself is often called a roller compactor.
